Connecting Europe through its World Heritage Sites

Seven countries. Thirteen schools. One shared mission — to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that define our cultures and bring them to life for students across Europe. Through collaboration, research and digital storytelling, we map the monuments, landscapes and living traditions that make our continent extraordinary.

Mapping Our Heritage

Mapping Our Heritage is a cross-border eTwinning project uniting 13 schools across 7 European countries — Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, North Macedonia and Poland. Together, students and teachers research, document and celebrate the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that anchor their communities to a shared European story. The project runs on the belief that heritage is not a relic of the past but a living conversation between peoples — and that young people are its most vital voice.

Project Goals

Create a collaborative digital platform that maps and showcases UNESCO World Heritage Sites across partner countries
Foster genuine cross-cultural dialogue by connecting students around shared monuments, landscapes and living traditions
Develop students' research, writing and digital literacy skills through authentic, project-based learning
Strengthen European identity by helping young people discover what their cultures hold in common as well as what makes each unique
Produce a lasting public resource that schools, families and communities can explore long after the project concludes

Pedagogical Objectives

Build intercultural competence through regular peer exchange and collaborative content creation across language boundaries
Develop critical thinking by encouraging students to investigate heritage from historical, ecological and social perspectives
Practise English as a shared working language in a meaningful, real-world context
Cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility — students are authors, researchers and ambassadors, not passive learners
Encourage empathy and curiosity by placing students' own heritage in dialogue with that of their European peers

eTwinning & European Context

This project is registered on the European School Education Platform (eTwinning), the world's largest community for school collaboration in Europe
It contributes to the EU's strategic objective of promoting European identity, cultural heritage awareness and active citizenship among young people
Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, reflecting a commitment to inclusive, high-quality education across borders
Partner schools collaborate in real time through the project's TwinSpace, sharing resources, research and creative work throughout the academic year

The Spirit of Togetherness

Every dot on this map represents not just a heritage site but a classroom — a group of students who made it their own through research and storytelling
We believe that learning about each other's monuments, traditions and landscapes is one of the most direct routes to mutual understanding
From the minarets of Edirne to the wooden churches of Małopolska, from the shores of Lake Ohrid to the trulli of Alberobello — we are different, and that difference is our greatest strength
This project is proof that young Europeans, when given the tools and the trust, will build something worth sharing
